  • Maintain good oral hygiene with proper and regular brushing and flossing
  • Check regularly for any changes in your mouth, and see a dentist immediately if you notice any ulcers or red or white patches that have not cleared up within three weeks
  • Always use suncream or a protective barrier balm with SPF on your lips when exposed to the sun
  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet, rich in vitamins A, C and E

Stop or reduce smoking and alcohol consumption

Am I at risk from mouth cancer?

There are a number of factors that can increase a person’s chances of developing oral cancer such as;

  • A family history of mouth cancer
  • Tobacco products whether they are smoked or chewed greatly increases a person’s chances of getting oral cancer
  • Drinking alcohol in excess can lead to an increased risk of developing mouth cancer, especially when combined with smoking
  • Prolonged exposure to sunlight can lead to lip and skin cancer
  • Those over the age of 40 are more likely to develop it but younger people can get it too
  • Those who don’t eat a healthy, balanced diet are more at risk of oral cancer
How do dentists check for oral cancer?

An examination will be carried out looking at and feeling certain areas and tissue including;

  • Head and neck – for lumps, bumps, tenderness or swelling
  • Lips – for colour changes, sores, changes in texture
  • Cheeks – for any white, red or dark patches, tenderness, ulcers or lumps
  • Roof of mouth – for lumps or changes in colour
  • Tongue – to see if there are any ulcers, swelling, or suspicious areas of unusual colour or texture
  • Floor of the mouth – for swelling, lumps, ulcers and colouring that is different

Dentists are trained to spot the early signs of cancer and can see areas inside the mouth that patients cannot, so regular dental check-ups with a qualified professional are always advised.

How much do veneers cost?

As with all cosmetic dental treatments, the total cost of veneers will depend on the individual patient and how many veneers they need, as well as if they require any additional treatments such as orthodontics, composite bonding or whitening to help achieve the best end results.

At Marsh Farm Dental our fees for veneer treatment start from just £850 each for porcelain veneers. How long do veneers last for?

Veneers are a long-term solution which can last anywhere from 5 to 10 years, but their longevity will largely depend on the veneer itself, the placement in the mouth and the patient.

Taking the time to properly care for and maintain veneers is very straight forward and can make all the difference in ensuring that they continue to look great and last as long as possible.

Maintain and care for your veneers by;

  • Practicing good oral hygiene with a daily dental routine of thorough brushing and flossing
  • Attend regular dentist appointments
  • Avoid bad habits such as biting pen lids, crunching ice, chewing fingernails etc
  • If you find that you are grinding your teeth at night then see your dentist straight away for a retainer or mouth guard
  • Your teeth should not be used to open bottles, packaging etc
  • A custom mouthguard should be worn when playing sports.
What are veneers?

Veneers are wafer thin layers of porcelain or composite resin that are custom-made to fit perfectly over existing teeth to improve their appearance. They are commonly used to change the colour, shape, size or spacing of teeth, helping to cover a number of cosmetic dental imperfections such as;

  • Staining and discolouration
  • Gaps
  • Cracks or chips
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Teeth that are misaligned
  • Short or worn-down teeth

Veneers can be used to treat a single tooth or multiple teeth if required, delivering beautiful, natural results that leave patients smiling with confidence.

How much does composite bonding cost?

As with every dental treatment, the total price of composite bonding may vary depending on how many teeth require treatment, what issues it is being used to treat and how long the appointment will take.

At Marsh Farm Dental our composite bonding prices can therefore range from £155 – £350 per tooth.

Please note that these are just a guide price, but we will be happy to give you a full price breakdown with your treatment plan.

How long does composite bonding last?

The longevity of composite bonding treatment will depend on the individual patient, their teeth and how they care for them, but if properly looked after, most should last for around 3-5years.

One of the great things about composite bonding is that it does not require any excessive or complicated maintenance. Patients simply need to ensure they continue with good oral hygiene, attend regular check-ups, brush their teeth twice a day and avoid the temptation to give in to bad habits such as biting pens, ice and fingernails.

Composite is very tough but isn’t indestructible and therefore can chip and stain over time but usually these can be buffed out and resolved very easily.

The most common culprits that cause staining of teeth and composite bonding are tea, coffee, red wine and smoking.

What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding is an advanced dental technique that uses tooth coloured resin to cover, correct or improve aesthetic imperfections. The process itself is very straight forward and would typically involve the following steps;

  • The bonding resin is colour matched to the natural shade of your teeth (unless it is being used to whiten teeth)
  • The resin is carefully applied to the surface of the affected tooth
  • Whilst it is still malleable, the resin is shaped and used to cover whatever imperfection was there, whether that’s a crack, chip, gap, exposed root or shortened, worn teeth
  • A special light is used to harden the resin.
How long will the results last for?

The amount of time that results last for will depend on the individual, their teeth and how they take care of them. Results last on average between 6-12 months if properly maintained.

It is recommended that if you want to keep your teeth whiter for longer than you avoid things such as smoking or consuming products that stain the teeth such as tea, coffee and red wine. As well as this, preventative measures including regular brushing, flossing, drinking plenty of water, using a straw for acidic beverages and rinsing the mouth after eating and drinking will all work to help maintain your beautiful white smile.

What are the benefits of professional teeth whitening?

There are many great benefits to professional teeth whitening such as;

What is the teeth whitening process?

The whitening process can vary depending on the type and brand of product that is being used.

At Marsh Farm Dental, we use Boutique, a whitening brand we know and trust that was created by dentists to make beautiful smiles accessible to everyone. The Boutique whitening process typically involves;

  • Consultation – A check up to examine the teeth and gums and discuss your needs. Moulds of your teeth will also be taken.
  • Trays – The unique mould will be sent to the laboratory where expert technicians create bespoke whitening trays that will comfortably fit your mouth.
  • Whitening – Once you have collected your trays from us, you can start using them at home as instructed by your dentist.
  • Results – In around 2-3 weeks you will be able to fully appreciate the results of the whitening treatment, although this timeframe may vary depending on the individual patient.
How long can dental implants last for?

Dental implants are a long term, permanent solution for tooth loss and can last for 20-30 years or even more if they are properly cared for. However, the number of years you get from your dental implants can depend on a various factor such as;

  • Your oral hygiene – be sure to brush consistently and attend regular dentist and hygienist visits.
  • Health and lifestyle – dental implants in the mouth of patients who smoke, drink heavily or have generally unhealthy lifestyles will be more likely to fail.
  • Bad habits – implants can be damaged from constant or excessive biting of nails or chewing hard items.
  • The dentist – the lifespan of the implant can depend on the competence and experience of the dentist who placed it.

Where it is in the mouth – because of frequent chewing, implants located at the back of the mouth do tend to fail more quickly.

What is the dental implant process?

The process of dental implants is usually completed over several months.

Under local anaesthetic, a titanium screw or rod is implanted into the jawbone. This will act as a replacement root and gradually fuse or ‘bond’ with the bone over time through something known as osteointegration, providing a stable anchor to support the attachments.

Once the jaw has healed after around 6-12 weeks, an abutment, which is a small connector, is attached to the implant and on top of that the crown or artificial tooth is then secured into place.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is the name for a metal rod or screw that is surgically placed in the jawbone and used as a mounting post on which artificial teeth, crowns and bridges can be secured. Because of the way dental implants work, they are not only aesthetically pleasing but are the closest you can get to real teeth in terms of function.

Dental implants are an effective, reliable, hard-wearing, long-term solution for patients missing one, multiple or even all of their teeth. Not only does it work to restore the look and function of the missing teeth but delivers incredibly natural results, allowing patients to eat, smile and laugh without feeling self-conscious.

How much does Invisalign cost?

The overall cost of Invisalign will depend on the individual patient, their dental needs and any additional issues that have to be resolved before or after the straightening treatment can start.

At Marsh Farm Dental our Invisalign consultation costs £199.00 with the full treatment price for a complete set of Invisalign costing £3,500. From the £199.00 consultation fee, £100 will come off of the Invisalign treatment (worth £3.5k) if that patient goes ahead with the treatment plan.

How does the Invisalign treatment work?

An Invisalign trained doctor will take precise digital scans of your teeth and use them to map out and create a bespoke treatment plan that will help to gradually align your teeth and achieve your smile goals.

The custom aligners work by applying a controlled force to different parts of the teeth at different stages of the process, allowing them to move quickly and efficiently with minimal pain or discomfort.

The aligners are usually worn for 1-2 weeks, and reviews are normally between 4-8 weeks so that we can check on your progress.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign aligners are created using a thin, clear, premium, medical-grade plastic material and fit over the teeth in the same way a gum shield or retainer does. The aligners are worn in a sequence, changing every 1-2 weeks or so onto the next retainer in the series, moving the teeth gradually, a little bit at a time for gentle, comfortable and accurate results.
These custom made, transparent aligners can be removed quickly and discretely, allowing patients the freedom to go about their everyday lives without hindrance or feeling self-conscious about their teeth.

How long is an implant treatment?

What is an implant?

An implant is a titanium post that is placed under the gum, into the area where the missing tooth would be. The post acts to replicate the natural tooth root and on top of this, a crown is fitted which replaces the visible part of the tooth normally seen in the mouth, therefore restoring the cosmetic and functional aspects of the missing tooth.

How much is an implant?

Implants start at £2500. This price can increase to £3000 in cases where additional bone may be required to support the implant. At the Marsh Farm Dental, we use one of the world’s leading implant systems.
